TMJ stands for the temporomandibular joint — the joint on each side of your face that connects the lower jaw to the skull. TMD, or temporomandibular disorder, refers to a group of conditions affecting these jaw joints, the muscles used for chewing or related structures.
TMD symptoms can include jaw pain, stiffness, painful clicking, restricted movement, locking and discomfort while chewing. Jaw and facial pain can also have causes unrelated to TMD, so persistent symptoms should be assessed rather than diagnosed from symptoms alone.
A clinical evaluation typically considers your symptoms, medical and dental history, jaw movement and areas of tenderness. Imaging may be recommended when clinically necessary
Symptoms that may occur with a temporomandibular disorder include:
Jaw clicking or popping without pain is common and does not necessarily require treatment. Clicking associated with pain, locking or restricted movement should be assessed
Jaw pain can originate from the jaw joint, chewing muscles, teeth or other medical conditions, so the appropriate clinician depends on the underlying cause.
A dentist or clinician experienced in temporomandibular disorders and orofacial pain can assess:
Consider an evaluation when jaw pain persists, repeatedly returns, restricts movement or interferes with eating and normal daily activity.
At TMJ India, our team of trained and skilled TMJ specialist in Bangalore provide the best treatment for your TMJ problems. We are committed to understanding your pain from the early symptoms stage to the present, diagnosing accurately and providing the right treatment plan. With advanced medical and surgical equipment, we are equipped to conduct the complex of surgeries and ensure you hit the faster road to recovery.
With various treatment for TMJ pain like splint therapy where you get splints to correct your alignment of your jaws, physical therapy to improve jaw function and reducing muscle tension, providing medications and if required surgery, we ensure you have the best fit option to rectify your TMJ problems.
Your evaluation considers jaw movement, joint and muscle symptoms, medical and dental history, and additional investigations when clinically appropriate.
Temporomandibular disorders include several different conditions, so treatment should be based on the diagnosis rather than applying the same approach to every patient.
Where appropriate, treatment begins with conservative and reversible options before considering more invasive procedures, consistent with current TMD guidance.
Our Jayanagar centre provides consultation, treatment planning and follow-up care for patients with TMJ-related symptoms and jaw pain.
FAQs
A dentist or healthcare professional experienced in assessing temporomandibular disorders and orofacial pain can evaluate persistent jaw pain. Because several conditions can cause similar symptoms, proper assessment should come before treatment.
Consider an assessment if you have persistent jaw pain, repeated locking, difficulty opening your mouth, painful chewing or clicking accompanied by pain or restricted movement.
No. Clicking or popping without pain is common and generally does not require treatment. Jaw sounds accompanied by pain, locking or restricted movement should be evaluated.
Many TMDs are managed with conservative approaches such as self-care, exercises, physical therapy, medication or selected intraoral appliances. Surgery is generally reserved for specific severe conditions rather than being routine treatment.
TMD includes several different conditions, so there is no single permanent cure that applies to everyone. Some symptoms improve with simple management or over time, while persistent conditions may require ongoing treatment based on the diagnosis
