Temporomandibular disorders, or TMDs, are conditions that affect the jaw joints, chewing muscles and related structures. Symptoms can include persistent jaw pain, painful clicking, restricted jaw movement, jaw locking and discomfort while chewing.TMJ refers to the temporomandibular joint itself, while TMD refers to disorders affecting this joint and the surrounding muscles. If jaw pain or restricted movement is persistent or interfering with eating, speaking or daily activities, an assessment can help determine whether the symptoms are related to a TMD or another dental or medical condition.
At The Right Bite Sleep and TMJ Pain Care in Delhi, patients can be evaluated for jaw pain, locking and other TMJ-related symptoms before an individual treatment plan is recommended.

TMJ Disorder Symptoms and Possible Causes
Temporomandibular disorders can involve the jaw joint, chewing muscles or both. In many patients, there is no single identifiable cause.
Common symptoms include:
Pain in the jaw joint or chewing muscles
Pain spreading into the face or neck
Jaw stiffness
Restricted mouth opening
Jaw locking
Painful clicking or popping
Difficulty or discomfort while chewing
Jaw clicking or popping without pain is common and does not always require treatment.
Some TMDs may be associated with jaw injury, joint disorders, muscle-related pain or arthritis. However, current evidence does not support the assumption that a “bad bite” or orthodontic treatment is a general cause of TMD
The right clinician for jaw pain depends on what is causing the symptoms. Jaw pain may come from the temporomandibular joint, chewing muscles, dental conditions or other medical causes.
A dentist or clinician experienced in temporomandibular disorders and orofacial pain can assess:
Where the pain is located
How well the jaw opens and moves
Whether the joint or chewing muscles are tender
Whether clicking or locking is painful
Whether another dental or medical condition needs to be ruled out
Seek an assessment when jaw pain persists, repeatedly returns, limits mouth opening or affects eating and normal daily activity
Jaw locking can occur when movement of the temporomandibular joint becomes restricted. Some people experience difficulty opening the mouth fully, while others may temporarily have difficulty closing it.
Repeated locking should be clinically evaluated rather than treated based on symptoms alone.
Assessment may include your medical and dental history, jaw movement, muscle and joint tenderness and, when clinically required, imaging such as X-rays, MRI or CT.
Treatment depends on the underlying diagnosis. Conservative approaches are generally considered before invasive procedures
Treatment for a temporomandibular disorder depends on the diagnosis, severity of symptoms and how the condition affects jaw function. For many TMDs, treatment begins with simple, conservative approaches.
Depending on the condition, treatment may include:
Temporary soft-food modification
Heat or cold therapy
Guided jaw exercises
Physiotherapy or manual therapy
Reducing persistent jaw clenching or similar habits
Medication when clinically appropriate
Selected intraoral appliances
Self-management strategies
If simpler measures do not provide adequate improvement, additional treatment may be considered according to the specific diagnosis.
Treatments that permanently change the teeth, bite or jaw joint should not be routine first-line treatment for TMD. Surgery is generally reserved for selected conditions when clinically justified

FAQs
A dentist or healthcare professional experienced in evaluating temporomandibular disorders and orofacial pain can assess TMJ symptoms. The appropriate clinician depends on whether your problem involves the joint, muscles or another dental or medical condition.
Persistent jaw pain can be assessed by a dentist or clinician familiar with TMD and orofacial pain. Because several conditions can cause similar symptoms, examination and diagnosis should come before treatment.
Treatment depends on the diagnosis. Options can include self-management, exercises, physiotherapy, medication and selected oral appliances. More complex procedures are considered only when clinically appropriate.
Repeated jaw locking should be assessed by a healthcare professional experienced in jaw-joint disorders. The evaluation may include jaw movement, muscle and joint examination and imaging when required
There is no single permanent cure that applies to every TMD because temporomandibular disorders include several different conditions. Some symptoms improve with simple care or resolve over time, while persistent conditions may need ongoing management.
No. Jaw clicking or popping without pain is common and usually does not require treatment. Clicking associated with pain, locking or restricted movement should be evaluated.
