TMJ CONNECTED TO POSTURE

How is the TMJ connected to posture?

Contrary to popular and traditional belief, the postural chain actually starts from a higher up position to the cervical vertebrae, the TMJ. This is why TMD (temporo mandibular joint disorders) have complex symptoms ranging from cervical headaches and finger tingling to lower back pains and leg cramps.

Any change in position of the lower jaw will lead to a change in position of the spine; and vice versa. These positional changes in the spine leads to compression of the spinal nerves and blood vessels resulting in a myriad of symptoms. We use a postural grid and a MatScan to measure clinically and objectively the asymmetries caused thence.

As an example, if the jaw moves to the left, the head position would tilt to the right to compensate. This would then result in the drooping of the right shoulder and the consequent ahift of hip to the left and a change in symmetry of the feet a angulation. Hence, most TMD patients would have an imbalance in weight distribution between left and right feet. Also, these patients end up with a scoliotic back.
A patient with neck pains would generally visit an orthopedist who would then either refer to a physiotherapist or prescribe medicines. The physiotherapist works on the neck to relax your muscles to reduce pain. However, the pain comes back again because the jaw is still not in the ideal position.

This is why athletes are provided with customised mouth guards to enable the body maintain the perfect postural balance and hence avoid chronic injuries. All The Right Bite SPC centres are equipped to correct postural imbalances. We have in-house physiotherapists who work on the patients’ posture; immediately after which we correct the bite at a micron level for extreme precision. This will ensure that the symptoms don’t relapse.
